More than 300,000 Australian men, women and children are affected by lymphoedema which is a serious, incurable condition. It is not widely known but one in 6,000 children are born with lymphoedema. Many others acquire it through surgery with breast cancer being a common cause.

If detected early, lymphoedema can be effectively treated by exercise (including Tai Chi), massage and compression garments. Patients can adopt measures which enable them to lead physically active and fulfilling lives.

When the lymphatic system is not working as it should it is unable to perform its function of clearing the area of proteins and toxins. The excess lymphatic fluid causes pain and swelling and the person is prone to infection

Lymphoedema is treated by compression garments to stop and reduce the swelling. These garments need to be specially prepared. The clinic treats all forms of oedema and the aim is not only to decrease the size of the swelling but to offer a better quality of life to the patient.
